Chapter 7 & Epilogue

Here we are, at the end of the book and the final discussions. I hope you have enjoyed the book as much as I have but more importantly, I hope it has inspired you to try or modify some of your practices. I also look forward to the opportunities to have a common dialogue about formative assessment and to see the benefit(s) for our students! Thank you for taking part in this book study. You exceeded my expectations!

In Chapter 5 Wiliam discussed how feedback should cause thinking and cause students to be the owners of their own thinking. Chapter 6 gave practical techniques teachers can use to get students involved in assessing each other’s work in order to improve it (not to assess it). The last chapter reminds us that “only learners create learning” and that in doing so it can “produce extraordinary improvements in their achievement.”

Read Chapter 7-Activating Students as Instructional Owners of their Own Learning
Respond to the questions below by posting to the page:
7-1: Explain a time you have had success with student self-assessment or how you might try it this year.
7-2: What do you think about Wiliam’s statements on metacognition and motivation?
7-3: When looking at Wiliam's Practical Techniques (p. 152-158) for self assessment, how do Learning Portfolios and Learning Logs fit with what we do with our IB work? Or how might it enhance what we are trying to accomplish with reflection and student portfolios?

Read - The Epilogue then Respond to Final Reflection and Next Steps
Wiliam makes the case that to raise student achievement, we have to improve our strategies and techniques. He acknowledges that we cannot possibly anticipate all of the factors that affect student achievement but there are 5 things (p. 152) we can do to improve our chances. He also states that it’s not about teachers not being “good enough,” but that all teachers can get better.

As you consider this, all that you have read, and the dialogue that has centered around the book, please respond to the Final Reflection:
FR-1: List 3 things that were affirmed for you.
FR-2: List 2 things you are going to try.
FR-3: List 1 thing that you believe so strongly that you will share with colleague(s). Please be explicit and explain what this will really look like:
-Who will you share this with? Curriculum Partner, Department Members, Grade Level Team, Other
-What will you share with them?
-What action(s) are you going to take?
-When and what is the timeline for your action and follow up with them?
FR-4: Is there anything else you that should be done with this information in your building?
Thanks again for participating in this book study. I appreciate your thoughtful responses and professionalism that has moved all of us further in our thinking about formative assessment. I look forward to you putting it into action and hearing from you about the successes!
